How to care for your tatted lace jewellery
A tatted jewel is made of starched cotton thread and natural stones: living materials that, with a few simple precautions, keep their shape and colour for years. Here is how to take care of it.
The three golden rules
1. Avoid water: take the jewel off before showering, swimming or going to the sea. Moisture softens the starch that gives the lace its structure. 2. Avoid perfume and hairspray directly on the jewel: put it on as the final touch, once perfume and make-up have dried. 3. Avoid folding or crushing it in your bag: lace has a shape memory that deserves respect.
How to store it
Keep the jewel lying flat, in its original packaging or in a rigid little box, away from direct sunlight (which over time can alter the colours of the thread and of some stones such as amethyst). If you own several pieces, keep them separate so the stones do not scratch one another.
If the lace loses its shape
No need to worry: in most cases it is enough to lay the jewel on a flat surface and gently reshape it with your fingers. For light cleaning use a soft, dry cloth; for the stones, a barely damp cloth is enough, keeping clear of the lace.
